ACTS. 20: 1-12

Title: Christians, encourage Christians to work for the Lord.

1  After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia.   2  When he had gone through those regions and had given them much encouragement, he came to Greece. 3  There he spent three months, and when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. 4  Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus from Berea, accompanied him; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus.   5  These went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas,   6  but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.   7  On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. 8  There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. 9  And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.   10  But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."   11  And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed.   12  And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted. Acts. 20: 1-12

Title: Christians, encourage Christians to work for the Lord.

1  After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia.  (ESV)                                                                                               Encouraging = (Parakaleo) in Greek which mean just that to encourage

Encourage means "incitement to action or to practice; or giving courage or confidence or hope;" (Definitions of encouragement on the Web: at

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=ojh&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&defl=en&q=define:encouragement&ei=FFICTNyBB8T68AaXgvHHDQ&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title&ved=0CBUQkAE)

However Nelson says it could be "Rebuking, confronting, instruction, warning & correction"

1 Tim. 1: 3                                                                                                                                                              "3  As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,   4  nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. 5  The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith"  (ESV)

Stewardship = The  Work of God.

ACTS. 20: 7  On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight." (ESV)                                                                                                                                                       First day of the week = Sunday because Saturday is the Sabbath and the last day of the week.                                            Why did the disciples come together on Sunday?

Much as we do today it was to celebrate the day of the resurrection                                                                               Heb. 4: 8-10                                                                                                                                                                      8  For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9  So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,   10  for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.  (ESV)

o   Because work came as a punishment for sin,

o   At death because of Jesus work here on the earth work will end at death.

ACTS. 20: 9  And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead."  (ESV)                                                                                                                                 Because of Paul's long sermon, and the time of night that it was Eutychus fell asleep and fell out the 3rd story and died.                                                                                                                                                    This could have been from the heat in the room that caused Eutychus to fall asleep, Don't you get sleepy when its hot and stuffy?

o   But Paul had also been preaching for quite a while and continuied till day brake.

o   The perpose of the meeting on Sunday was for the most part to brake Bread as Jesus had told them to do till He comes again.

Conclusion

Encourage each other as we meet every Sunday to do the work of God.                                                                                                                      And ask yourself Who can I encourage to serve God today?

Sermon Notes From 5-23-2010

Acts.19: 21- 41

Title: The Way that brings people to the way in Christ today.

21  Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome." 22  And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.   23  About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24  For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25  These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.   26  And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.   27  And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship." 28  When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"   29  So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel.   30  But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.   31  And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. 32  Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33  Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.   34  But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" 35  And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? 36  Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.   37  For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.   38  If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39  But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40  For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion."   41  And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly. (ESV)

ACTS. 19: 21- 41

Title: The Way that brings people to the way in Christ today.

A great disturbance about the way.                                                                                                                                   .  ACTS. 19: 23  About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way.

The Way is hodos in the Greek which mean "a term for the Christian lifestyle"

There was a concern over the lifestyle of these believers, they were leading people to Christ through their Lifestyles.

Psalms 66:5   come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

John 1:46   Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "come and see."

Philippians 1:27   Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,

Because of Paul's lifestyle people where turning to the same lifestyle. What is your lifestyle like?

Demetrius begins to losses His profit because of the way.                                                                                             ACTS. 19: 24  For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.

This was not about Paul as much as it was about the Lifestyle that was taking away from his profit.  And we all know anytime you take away a man's profit you make them turn toward you in anger.

ACTS. 16: 16  As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.                                                         18  And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. 19  But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.

So you see when you cause a person to lose their wealth they will turn on you.

ACTS. 19: 27  And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.

It is not about Paul, and its not about you but its about the Way.

Some people will follow the crowed even if they know what its about. Are you one of these next people                                                                                                                                                                                        ACTS.19:  32  Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.

So to conclude                                                                                                                                                            if The Way is The Way that people know you are in The Way, How many people know you are in The Way?

Is your Lifestyle a reflection of Christ or is it a reflection of the World?

Can you say to the world around you Come and See, or do you say leave me be?
